Dental implants serve as a permanent replacement for a missing tooth or missing teeth. Implants look, feel, and function like normal teeth. Implants are available to patients who have healthy gums and plenty of bone to keep the implant in place. Patients who elect to receive an implant should practice good oral care and receive regular dental cleanings to maintain the health of the gums around the implant.
What To Expect
Each patient's situation is unique. Consequently, our team at Oak Lane Dental will work with your unique needs and desires to create a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.
When you come to our office for the procedure, the dentist will put a tooth root implant into a missing tooth's bone socket. In 6 to 12 weeks, the jawbone will heal, growing around the root implant to anchor it in the jaw.
Once the implant is firmly attached tot he jawbone, the dentist will attach a small connector post (abutment) to hold the new tooth. Our team will take impressions to model your bite, ensuring that the implant or implant-supported bridge will look like your natural teeth.
Finally, a crown or bridge will be attached to the implant abutment, giving you a brand new smile! to give you your brand new smile!
In order to last a lifetime, dental implants should be cared for just like natural teeth. They should be kept clean and plaque-free by brushing twice a day and flossing daily. Cleaning is especially important after meals. Brush gently, giving special attention to all sides of the implant.
Oral hygiene aids may include:
Small, soft, manual toothbrush or an electric brush
Low-abrasive, tartar-control toothpaste
Dental floss for cleaning around the abutments
Other supplies that may be recommended by the dentist can include:
Antimicrobial mouth rinses
Inter-dental brushes or other aids for removing plaque between the teeth on either side of the implant(s)
Disclosing tablets to stain the locations of plaque accumulation
You must be committed to proper at-home oral care, along with regular visits to the dentist. We recommend that you visit us at least every 6-months for a professional exam and cleaning. Your dental implant/s should also be examined with an x-ray annually.
